Juneau Douglas Island Cup

Type: Adult

Divisions: Expert, Advanced

Levels: Expert, Advanced

Arena: Treadwell Arena

2nd Annual JAHA Douglas Island Cup

The JAHA Douglas Island Cup is happening in 2017!

This year, we're trying something new - this tournament is in late summer, August 25th - 27th. Why, you ask? Well, here are some reasons!

  • Downtown Juneau will be bustling with tourists, meaning all the seasonal shops, restaurants, and attractions will be open.
  • Fishing will be in full swing and charter outings for those coming in from outside Juneau will be readily available.
  • Whales will be cruising Juneau's waterways regularly... play hockey and whale watch in the same trip? YES.
  • Also, eagles. And bears. And majestic mountains with glacier-fed rivers.
  • Zip lining, Mt. Roberts Tram, hiking, and all sorts of other excursions will be available for those visiting the area.
  • And... HOCKEY!

Enough said!

(...if that's not enough, just take a look at what Juneau has to offer by visiting traveljuneau.com!)

COST

The per-team registration is $900. A maximum of 10 teams may register. Two team slots will be reserved for local teams.

Like last year, team registration is open to out-of-town teams first. Local team registration will open at a later date.

SKILL LEVEL

Teams should be of Expert and/or Advanced/Intermediate skill level. Ideally, we'll have an even split of both skill levels, allowing for two separate divisions of play.

These skill levels are defined below:

EXPERT - This is the most competitive division. Players in this division have substantial hockey abilities, skills, knowledge, and experience. Players in this division have been coached and have played considerable hockey in the past and some have extensive organized hockey experience, likely to include high school or junior level play, advanced college, or higher.

ADVANCED/INTERMEDIATE - This division is for players who are familiar with the rules of hockey, are generally athletic, have good knowledge of the game, skating, and puck handling skills, and can play at a general competitive level. This division may also include those newer to the sport.

TRAVELLING TO ALASKA

We hope that if you have not been to Alaska, this provides a great reason for you to come visit for the first time, and if you've been here in the past, a great reason to come back! Getting to Alaska sounds like a big deal, but it's not. It's like going anywhere! We've also made some arrangements to make it even easier:

LODGING

We've arranged group rates with the following Juneau hotels - information on how to book these rates will be provided upon registration:

  • Westmark Baranof, $169/night Standard Room
  • Aspen Suites, $165/night Single Queen, $185/night Double Queen

AIRFARE

Alaska Airlines has offered a 5% discount off their regular fares to Juneau (not including companion fares or other promotional fares). A discount code will be provided to you upon registration that you can use to book the reduced fare.

You should plan on arriving no later than Friday, August 25th at 11am (games will start in the early afternoon) and departing no sooner than Sunday, August 27th at 3pm.

Close and convenient Rochester, New York is a great tournament destination!   This Little Big City is ideally located in the middle of many great hockey markets!   Expect teams from southern and eastern Ontario, Detroit, Erie, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Syracuse, Utica, Albany and the East Coast.   Roc City has a long hockey history and is home of the AHLS ROCHESTER AMERICANS and the R.I.T. NCAA D1 TIGERS!   Make sure to take in a game when in town!     For family fun a great attraction is the Strong Museum Of Play.    This unique toy museum has been voted year after year one of best family friendly museums in the U.S.!  Another recommended destination is a Saturday morning visit to the Rochester Public Market for breakfast and shopping.    Surrounded by an array of cafes, coffee shops, food stands and unique shops the market is always a favorite for locals and out of town guests.    Finally, for a little fun and gastronomical adventure try what locals call a garbage plate.    Nick Tahou Hots, a landmark restaurant, is widely regarded as the originator of the dish.   However,    there are many other local purveyors serving up their versions as well.
